I can understand the fear of people on the possibility of a
criminal break into their houses and kill everybody. However, I don’t condone
the act of possessing gun. I believe that this can only raise the rates of
accidental crimes and since a person with a gun can be killed by his own gun.
And I think that there are other alternatives to possessing gun. For instance,
the government should find other ways of solving this problem. Another thing
that bothers me is the fact that in some states the gun laws are becoming more
lax. For example, in Georgia now it’s allowed to carry a gun even inside
churches and bars. Can you think of the possibility of someone get too drunk in
bar and start shooting? This makes me think that the place we live in is a
battlefield where everybody is ready to fight. Also, I think only the police
should have guns because that’s why they exist (to keep the order). Some people
may say that if we don’t possess gun we may become a pray to criminals. In
fact, they are right that there are a lot of people that possess guns
illegally. But how did they get their guns. That’s where we should focus our
attention.
I agree with your position, and I think you explain it respectfully and sensibly. I know of a church in my home town that recently had a debate and decided to (on its own) ban guns on its premises. One or two members were frustrated, but I don't think anyone left the congregation as a result. The statistics and common sense seem to suggest the same conclusion that you came to -- armed "heroes" are more likely to cause an unintended death than prevent a crime.

ReplyDeleteHis quote in the last 30 seconds about "my cold dead hands" has become a famous meme and almost a cliche.
This is an interesting news article with a link to an ad featuring Jim Brady, a victim of an assassination attempt against Ronald Reagan, who has fought for stricter gun control laws over the years. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2306924/New-gun-control-ad-stars-James-Brady-32-years-shot-paralyzed-assassination-attempt-President-Reagan.html
Thank you, William.
